“Peeling back the Paid Family & Medical Leave layers, including impacts from COVID!”

“A number of states have recently enacted Paid Family/Medical leave laws and implementing programs.  Kate and Lena will peel back the Paid Family/Medical Leave layers, and take a closer look at Washington and Oregon programs, including Covid-19 considerations. They will also share what is coming next and the legislative activities at the state and federal levels.  Hear how these new products may impact the disability insurance market, and learn best practices for keeping up with this ever evolving legislation.”

Kate Wilkinson has over twenty years of varied legal experience from litigating business and employment disputes to leading legal teams in the grocery, education and insurance fields.  She currently serves as senior director and assistant counsel at The Standard where she manages the insurance services legal team. Kate’s team works across the business – advising on everything from marketing compliance to mergers and acquisitions. Prior to The Standard, she served as litigation director for the Oregon School Boards Association, representing schools and community colleges around the state. She also served as the Human Resources Director and General Counsel for Oregon’s largest privately-owned grocery store chain. Kate’s passion centers on developing people, managing teams and leading to future state. She currently serves on the boards of Classroom Law Project and First Book Portland.

Lena Forrester, Compliance Consultant at The Standard has been in the Legal and Compliance Department for nearly 22 years,  including an intermittent leave to attend law school. For the last seven years she has focused on NY operational compliance issues, including implementation of the NY Paid Family Leave law. That led to compliance oversight in more recent PFML state adoptions such as WA and MA, and learning the state requirements for our business implementation. She is a graduate of Gonzaga University and always puts Gonzaga in the center of her NCAA bracket and then fills out the remaining brackets!
